William Shakespeare

Shakespeare - Unit 6 - MACBETH

  • INTERESTING, because there are a lot of interesting words and metaphors, old but new for me.
  • EDUCATIONAL, because all of his plays have a message, you can learn something, you can find yourself in them and try to be better

William Shakespeare was a renowned English poet, playwright, and actor born in 1564 in Stratford-upon-Avon. His birthday is most commonly celebrated on 23 April, which is also believed to be the date he died on in 1616.

Shakespeare's Work

Shakespeare's work includes 38 plays, 2 narrative poems, 154 sonnets, and a variety of other poems. No original manuscripts of Shakespeare's plays are known to exist today. It is actually thanks to a group of actors from Shakespeare's company that we have about half of the plays at all. They collected them for publication after Shakespeare died, preserving the plays. These writings were brought together in what is known as the First Folio ('Folio' refers to the size of the paper used). It contained 36 of his plays and none of his poetry.
Shakespeare’s legacy is as rich and diverse as his work; his plays have spawned countless adaptations across multiple genres and cultures. His plays have had an enduring presence on stage and film. His writings have been compiled in various iterations of The Complete Works of William Shakespeare, which include all his plays, sonnets, and other poems. William Shakespeare continues to be one of the most important literary figures of the English language

MACBETH

Macbeth is a tragedy by William Shakespeare; it is thought to have been first performed in 1606. It dramatizes the damaging physical and psychological effects of political ambition on those who seek power for its own sake. Of all the plays that Shakespeare wrote during the reign of James I, who was a patron of Shakespeare's acting companyMacbeth most clearly reflects the playwright's relationship with his sovereign. It was first published in the Folio of 1623, possibly from a prompt book, and is Shakespeare's shortest tragedy.

In Macbeth I've got 5 characters:

  • Porter— a strange gatekeeper. It is also a metaphor for the gates of hell. When the porter enters, it is a transition from a supernatural story to a more dramatic story.

  • Witch one (three witches)—  the confident witch
  • Captain—in the Scottish army
  • Seyton—Macbeth's armorer
  • Murderer 1— there were supposed to be 3 murderers but because we don't have people we've decided to have only 2 murderers. We're in ACT 3: scene 3 and we kill Banquo
