MACBETH characters
In the Macbeth performance on the 21st of March, I had to play 5 characters, one of the most important characters was the porter and the witch.
After opening the play with the witches scene I had to run to put a jacket on and quickly be the captain in less than 10 seconds.
The Captain declares “for brave Macbeth – well he deserves that name”, it reveals that Macbeth is a hero on the battlefield. The purpose of the captains' speech could be that it sets Macbeth up to become the ‘tragic hero’ of the play, once being a dauntless and loyal subject, described by Duncan as “O valiant cousin, worthy gentleman” to one who falls from grace into deceit and deception.
THE PORTER pretends to be the doorkeeper of the Hell Gate, he is drunk from the festivities of the night before and he has a monologue with an "equivocator who can not equivocate to heaven", "a farmer who hanged himself on the expectation of plenty" and "an English tailor". He hears a knocking and he is imagining that they are at the door. Because he thinks that he is at the Hell Gate, he invites them in.
To play the porter scene it was a bit hard because I had to look natural and drunk at the same time, I had a white shirt which was very messy and a bottle of alcohol. I had read a lot of information and videos about him to get into his skin.
On our rehearsals, I learned how to use the space, because it was a monologue and I was the only person on the stage in that scene, I had to use as much space as possible.
Another great character of mines was the witch one of the three witches.
The Witches meet Macbeth and Banquo. The witches are the supernatural element in the play; they have the appearance of women, and yet they don't look like inhabitants of the earth... FIRST WITCH (me): All hail, Macbeth, hail to thee, Thane of Glamis!
We tried to modernize it and we had some modern jumpsuits but messy hair. We were confident and scary.
I also played the murderer, dressed like agents, me and Favour killed Banquo in a sword fight. Macbeth commanded us to do it. The murderers were supposed to kill Banquo's son as well but he escaped while Banquo was trying to fight us.
Playing Murderer 1 was a great experience for me, a film director came to help us with the fight scene, after this, we had to rehearse a lot to make it look real.
My last character was Seyton, he is Macbeth's chief servant when his thanes are abandoning him. The fact that his name rhymes with 'Satan' may be coincidental. He helps to arm Macbeth and reports the Queen's death to him.
I tried to make this character look funny, smiling most of the time and speaking like a child.
